Build Your Own Butter Board for a Stunning Appetizer

Just when I thought homemade butter couldn’t get any more exciting, I discovered butter boards.

So of course, I had to give it a try and put my own spin on it.

This butter board started with a batch of homemade butter I blended earlier in the week (yes, you can make butter in a blender and it’s so fun!) and then turned into an edible work of art, if I do say so myself.

I had so much fun making and decorating this butter board, and I can’t wait to share the process with you.

If you’ve been looking for an over-the-top beautiful, but low-effort, appetizer or edible centerpiece for your table, this is the one to try!

What Is a Butter Board?

From what I’ve seen, a butter board is a cutting board or serving board spread with butter in a decorative way and decorated with a plethora of toppings like fresh herbs, spices, edible flowers, and crushed nuts. So kind of like if a charcuterie board had a baby with a fancy bakery cake?

Or maybe like a deconstructed compound butter?

No matter what you call it, a butter board is a simple-to-make, more affordable alternative to a charcuterie board. It’s easy to style and easy to create as the centerpiece for your next party.

Butter boards are easy, beautiful appetizers that can be as simple or complex as you want. But there is an art to making one that looks and tastes like you made it on purpose and didn’t just throw it together at the last minute. (Though you can certainly do that if you want!)

This guide will walk you through exactly how to create a butter board that’s both delicious and gorgeous. Plus I’ll show you the version I made recently using my own homemade butter, edible flowers, herbs, and hot honey. Take a look below!

The Basic Formula for a Butter Board

A great butter board has five core components:

  1. High-quality butter
  2. A simple base pattern
  3. Toppings
  4. Something to spread the butter on

The Butter

The butter is the most important component, so choose a butter that tastes amazing by itself. I recommend making your own butter using the instructions in this post.

If you can’t make your own, try Kerry Gold Irish butter. It tastes great and it’s widely available here in the US. Cultured butter is another delicious type of butter to use.

Set your butter out a few hours before making your board so that it can come to room temperature.

The Base Pattern

Next, decide what your base pattern will be. You can play around with some softened butter on a clean cutting board before you commit to a style. If you don’t like what you’ve laid down, just scrape it off and try again.

I recommend using a flat spatula to spread your butter, like the kind used for decorating cakes. You can also pipe the butter like icing, but I personally prefer little pats of butter arranged in a pattern.

The Toppings

Third, choose about 3 to 5 delicious toppings to sprinkle, decorate, or drizzle on top of your butter. I suggest aiming for a certain flavor palette or theme when selecting toppings. For example, a Tuscan-themed butter board could have rosemary, basil, sea salt, hot chili flakes, and finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes. See more flavor combinations towards the end of this post.

Choose at least one from each category:

  • a texture: flaky sea salt, crushed nuts, toasted seeds, chili crunch
  • a flavor booster: herbs, honey, citrus zest, roasted garlic, ground spices, capers, olives
  • a visual pop: edible flowers, chili flakes, dried fruit, citrus zest, rose petals or other edible flower petals

When in doubt, some salt and fresh herbs always make for a delicious and beautiful presentation.

The Vehicle

Last, provide something for people to spread this beautiful butter on.

Crackers, warm fresh bread, or toast are all great options. Keep it simple and plain. This board is all about the butter!

How to Build Your Ideal Butter Board Step-by-Step

A butter board is an easy way to impress your party guests and treat them to something that looks fancy, yet tastes comforting and familiar. It’s quick to assemble, makes the best of seasonal ingredients, and is customizable to your tastes or party theme.

Follow these 5 simple steps to build your ideal butter board.

Step 1: Choose a Board

Wooden cutting boards or serving boards work great. Marble boards would work as well. Just choose something large enough to spread your butter on in a decorative pattern, but not so large that you end up with too much butter! (Though is there really such a thing?)

Step 2: Spread the (Room-Temp) Butter

Use a flat spatula to spread the butter on your clean board in small decorative pats, swirls, or waves. Keep the butter pattern loose and natural. It’s OK if it’s not perfect.

You can use a piping bag to make fancy patterns if you wish, but I personally like the rustic look that a flat spatula creates.

Step 3: Layer the Dry Toppings

Start with prepped, sprinkle-able toppings like salt, crushed nuts, finely chopped herbs, citrus zest, or flower petals. Sprinkle a light, even layer right over the butter.

Carefully place larger, decorative toppings like whole herb leaves, dried fruit, or edible flowers in a way that looks beautiful to you.

TIP: Reserve whole flowers, larger citrus peels, nuts, and stems of herbs to decorate around the edges of the board. These won’t be eaten, but they look great for the presentation!

Step 4: Drizzle Wet Toppings (If Using)

Use a spoon to slowly drizzle wet toppings like honey, maple syrup, olive oil, or chili crisp.

If you are using a thick topping like jam, thin it out with a bit of water so that it’s easier to drizzle.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

Pile the crackers or bread around the butter board and enjoy.

TIP: A butter board can be made ahead of time without the wet toppings and stored in the refrigerator. Pull it out about an hour before serving so that the butter can come back to room temperature.

More Flavor Combination Ideas

I can’t let you go without sharing a few flavor combination ideas for butter boards!

  • chives + chili crisp + toasted sesame seeds
  • smoked paprika + chopped olives + olive oil
  • sage + black pepper + hot chili flakes

Sweet Boards

Have Leftovers?

If you have some butter leftover on your butter board, simple mix the remaining butter and toppings together and scrape into a small container. Keep the compound butter in the refrigerator and use within a day or two. Or shape into logs, wrap with plastic and freeze for later use.

You may not be able to recreate your stunning board with the leftover compound butter, but all the flavor will still be intact!
