DIY Lavender Wreath: A Simple Summer Craft

Learn how to make a fresh lavender wreath in this step-by-step guide. Celebrate lavender season with this DIY craft using fresh lavender that’s perfect for slow living and seasonal home decor.

Lavender is one of my favorite herbs to grow. It’s beautiful, fragrant, and delicious. I use it in brewing herbal tea blends, homemade lavender syrup, sachets, and all kinds of floral crafts.

Besides it’s amazing floral scent, lavender also dries beautifully, keeping its shape and color long after it’s picked.

That makes it perfect for slow, seasonal projects like this DIY lavender wreath or pressed flower resin charms like I show in this tutorial.

You can use dried lavender for this craft, but I prefer working with it fresh.

It’s much easier to manipulate and shape, and once dried on the wreath it will look pristine for months.

There’s also something meditative about working with fresh lavender to make a wreath like this. The rich purple color, the sweet smell clinging to your fingertips, and the feel of the stems as you wire it to the frame.

It’s not just a craft or decoration; it’s a way to rejuvenate.

Making a lavender wreath is a sweet way to celebrate early summer and enjoy the your harvest for months to come. If you’re drawn to seasonal slow living activities like this one, take a peek at my summer slow living bucket list.

Materials You’ll Need

This is what I used to make a DIY lavender floral wreath:

How to Make a Lavender Wreath

Step 1: Harvest Fresh Lavender

For the best color and fragrance, harvest when the lavender buds have just barely started to open.

Use sharp pruners to snip handfuls of lavender stems.

Step 2: Bundle the Lavender

Group the floral stems into several small bunches. Trim each bundle so the stems are about 4 inches long.

You want all the bundles to be roughly the same size for a uniform wreath.

Feel free to make bundles all in one go, or as you build your wreath.

Step 3: Attach to the Wreath Form

Starting with one bundle, use floral wire to secure it to the wreath form. Wrap the wire snugly around the stems.

As the lavender dries, stems will shrink slightly, so don’t be afraid to pull the wire tight.

Place the next bundle so that the flowers overlap and cover the stems of the previous one. Then wrap it again with wire.

Continue adding bunches of lavender like this until you’ve covered the wreath entirely.

Step 4: Finish and Tuck the Wire

When you reach the final bundle, wrap the wire several times around it and trim, leaving a 3-4 inch tail.

Tuck the tail under an existing wire loop and wrap a few more times to secure.

Hide any visible wire among the lavender stems.

You can also attach a small wire loop to the back of the wire wreath for easy hanging.

Ways to Make It Your Own

This DIY lavender wreath looks beautiful as it is, but you can make it your own by:

  • weaving a thin ribbon throughout the bundles
  • adding a pretty ribbon bow
  • tucking in other dried flowers like statice or strawflower for extra color and texture
  • make a bigger or small wreath using a different-sized wreath form
  • using a grapevine wreath or other wreath base made of natural materials

FAQs

Can I use dried lavender instead?
Yes, but it can be more brittle and harder to work with. A lot of buds will fall off, too!

How long will my lavender wreath last?
If kept dry and out of direct sunlight, it should last for several months, and maybe even years!

Can I make a mini version?
Absolutely! Use a smaller wreath form and fewer bundles to make a mini wreath.

When is lavender “in season”?
Lavender typically blooms from early to mid-summer. The exact timing depends on the climate and the lavender species or variety. Check with a local nursery to find out more.

Where can I find fresh lavender?
Look for a local flower farm or U-pick farm. Call and ask if they sell fresh lavender. Florists may also be able to provide you with fresh lavender.
